The Weakness of Government

America wanted a weak government. And, that’s exactly what they have. A powerful tyrannical government is the kind we escaped from (England) to come over here and be free. The point of coming to America was to make the government weaker and the people stronger; to make democracy work. Also, to create a society that everyone had a fair chance in instead of a society of aristocrats and peasants. Democracy put power into the hands of the people and most of those people were poor. In no time at all, society was built up in a new and more prosperous way. People were hopeful and happy they could have the chance to own land, own their own business, and have unlimited chances to succeed.

Fast Forward

There is a new overlord coming your way. It’s called big business. The corporatocracy is real. The nation is basically run by a bunch of big businesses. They all give large donations to politicians, meet politicians in nice resorts to discuss laws, and write the legislation themselves. This is all supposed to be ok because taking a big donation and nice vacations doesn’t sway anybody’s honest vote. All of the lobbyists vastly outnumber the people in office and their effect is not felt.

These kinds of laws don’t make sense to me. A bribe is illegal and that’s exactly what’s going on. Everybody knows it, but candidates just pretend everything is kosher; “Yes, I did take 500k dollars, but it didn’t affect my decision making.”

Times Change

We didn’t used to be run by corporations. Governments must change with the times. If we allow big business to rule the land, we will soon find that our middle class disappears. It’s already happening. Nowadays, most households are two income and almost half can’t even afford a home or even a basic life.

If you go back in time, a single earner without a college degree could buy a home, a new car, and have someone stay at home with the kids (usually mom). Now, if you compare that to now, there has been a serious erosion in the middle class.

Are Americans just lazier now? All the data shows that we are much more productive now than we ever were back then. You would think that producing more goods and services would produce more wages. However, this is sadly not the case. No matter how high the production rises, wages tend to be flat or drop over time in real dollars. The net effect is erosion.

Supply and demand are the real drivers. For wages to go up, labor must be in short supply. Technical changes have reduced many jobs to be so simple that virtually anyone can do them. These jobs will never pay well because too many people can do it. You still find good pay in jobs that require advanced technical skills.
